October 19 — Family Business (Genesis 29:1–30:24)

The deceiver is deceived and ends up with not one wife but two, along with fourteen years of labor from Laban working in the family business. Anytime man tries to mess with God’s design for the family, it leads to dysfunction and despair. We end up with one man, four mothers, and eleven sons whose very names tell the sad story of their family’s failures. And yet God remains faithful, the covenant continues, and the Lord proves once again that he works through broken people and broken families to accomplish the business of the kingdom.
